1. View from the Chemin des Dames, looking North-West (from
location A on map 2). The Germans occupied the high ground in the
distance and advanced across open ground from the intervening valley.
One can imagine how the German field-grey uniforms blended with
the terrain as they advanced. |

2. Looking westwards along the Chemin des Dames, from the front
line of the Moroccan troops (from location B on map 2). On the far
side of the road junction the West Yorkshire's came under fire from
the Moroccans by accident. This was also the area that 'D' company
of the Sherwood Foresters were later sent to reinforce. The trees
to the right surround a farm which was not present in 1914. |

3. The Sherwood Foresters attacked from the direction of the
trees in the distance, at the head of the Troyon Valley, towards
the viewer. The trenches of the West Yorkshire's lined the road
facing the viewer. The 2nd DLI were positioned along the dip in
the road. (Taken from location C on map 2). |

4. View of the area held by the 2nd Sherwood Foresters at the
end of 20 September 1914. Their trenches ran along the far side
of the Chemin des Dames from the position of the photographer to
the farm on the horizon. The haystack recorded on Wylly's sketch
map was on the lay-by on the left. (From location D on map 2) |
