1.
Resting all day. Clearing up.
2. Resting. Had a good bath. Church service (did not attend).
3. Bombing all morning with spring gun machine. Sunshine al day. Digging
fatigue at night.
4. Firing rifle grenades. Weather dull. Still out of the trenches.
5. Inspection by Stuart Wortley and also battalion sports.
6. Rest all day. Fine weather. Relieved the 8th at night.
7. In the trenches again. In a listening post all night. In the same
posts as the last six days. Very cold.
8. Sleeping in daytime. Again in listening post all night. Windy.
9. In a listening post all night. Very cold.
10. Still in the trenches. Again in a listening post. Very fine.
11. Resting all day. In a listening post all night. Bombing all day.
12. Resting in daytime. Raining all day. Relieved by the 8th. Six nights
in a listening post. Rotten weather.
13. Out of the trenches again. A day of rest. Clearing up.
14. Digging fatigue. 7 kilo away. Raining all day.
15. Went to Acq for a bath. Digging fatigue up to the trenches.
16. Breakfast 3.30 a.m. Inspection by Captain Spalding.
17. Bombing in the morning. Raining all day.
18. All parades off. Raining all day. Still resting.
19. Relieved the Wiltshires at Neuville St. Vaast. Digging all night.
20. At Neuville St. Vaast in the ruined cellars. Fine all day
21. In a French Sap all night. Raining all night.
22. Working in a French Sap. The first time in a French Sap about eighty
feet down.
23. Working in a French Sap. Fine all day.
24. Still at Neuville St. Vaast working down a French Sap.
25. Splendid weather all day. Heavy shelling. Still working at a Sap.
26. Still working at a sap. Splendid weather all day.
27. Heavy bombardment in the morning. Working at the Sap.
28. Bombardment all morning. Still working at the French Sap.
29. Finished sapping. Relieved by 5th Leicesters at night. Worked 10
days on a sap. Heavy bombardment all week.
30. Left Neuville St. Vaast. Arrived at Penin. Sunshine all day.
