Derbyshire Lads: The Men: S Dore February 1916

The Diary of Private Sidney Dore, number 3895, 14th Section, 8th Platoon, B Company, 1/7th Notts & Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment for the Year 1916.

February

1. Raining all day. Nothing to report. No parades.
2. Reported sick and had a kit inspection in billets.
3. Inspection and march past by Brigadier-General Shipley.
4. Reported sick with bad arm and got off with light duty.
5. Route march on very bad roads. Very tired after march. Mother and Willie sent me their photos during the week. Very pleased to receive them.
6. Second Divine service at Domquer.
7. We had a bath. The first time for about three months.
8. Received registered letter and parcel. Captain Leman's Birthday. Raining all day.
9. Snowed heavily. Supper for the last time at Domquer.
10. Left Domquer at 10 a.m. Arrived Prouville 12 a.m. Marched about 8 kilometres.
11. Raining heavily all day. Medical inspection. French cavalry depart to another part of the line.
12. Raining all morning. Short route march in the afternoon. Reported sick - arm. Received XX's(?) photo. Salmon for tea. My pal had a parcel.
13. No Divine Service. Armoured cars depart to another part of the line.
14. Reported sick with my arm. Short and very bad route march.
15. French light field guns passed. Third parade cancelled. Drawn a pair of pants to make my kit up.
16. Dad's birthday, also our Phyllis's. A Company & C Company depart to another place. Received my Mother's second parcel on Father's 47th birthday.
17. Sun shining in the morning but very cold. Bomb throwing in the afternoon.
18. Raining all day. Nothing to report. All parades cancelled.
19. B Company gets to do their firing at Ribeaucourt. Dull all day.
20. No parades. Fine all day. Baths for those who wanted one.
21. Left Prouville 10 a.m. Arrived at Berneuil at 12 a.m. March 8 kilometres.
22. Heavy blizzard. Snowing off and on all day long.
23. Went wood-chopping. Snowing all day. Heavy blizzard.
24. Wood-cutting. Cold all day. Jam pudding for dinner.
25. Heavy snow. Blizzard all day. Wood-cutting.
26. Wood-cutting. Heavy snow storm. Terrible snow storm every day. I wept with blizzard.
27. No Divine Service. Bath at 12 o'clock. Still snowing.
28. Tree felling at Epecamps. Very bad weather.
29. Left Berneuil 10.30 a.m. Arrived Beauval 2 o'clock. [Beauval south of Doullens]
