January

1. At Guarbecque doing outpost duties. Route march round about Guarbecque. Very bad and winding roads.
2. Divine service all on our own. Rev. Hales conducted the service.
3. Continuation of outpost work. Important to know all about it.
4. Kit inspection in our barns and then the rest of the day was ours.
5. Route march with the Brigade, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th.
6. We had chips for the last time at Guarbecque.
7. Left Guarbecque for Marseilles in cattle trucks.
8. Train journey to Marseilles in trucks.
9. Train journey to Marseilles.
10. Arrived at Marseilles in an exhausted condition. From Guarbecque to Marseilles it took us three nights and two days. We rode in cattle trucks, 36 to each truck.
11. Route march up the mountains.
12. Bathing in the sea. Very cold.
13. Bathing in the sea. It was a treat. Sunshine all day long.
14. Removed to Indian Camp after route march.
15. Mixed up with the Indians.
16. Service in the mountains at Marseilles.
17. Had supper with the Indians. Gave me his photo.
18. An Indian gave me his photo and also had supper for the second time.
19. We went don to the town to look at the sites and we paid no tramways fare.
20. Vaccinated at Marseilles.
21. Felt no effect of Vaccination and had supper with the Indians for the third time.
22. Little route march up to a church in the mountains.
23. Divine service in the mountains at Marseilles.
24. We had sham battles and scouting in the mountains finishing with a bayonet charge.
25. Left Marseilles for Domquer in cattle trucks.
26. Train journey to Pont-Remy still in cattle trucks.
27. Train journey to Pont-Remy in cattle trucks. Arms vaccinated.
28. Arrived Pont-Remy. Arrived Domquer. Record route march of 25 miles. Slept out all night. First time I have slept out. Woke up wet through and thoroughly exhausted.
29. Arm very bad after terrible march. Battalion exhausted.
30. First Divine Service at Domquer. Rev. Hales conducted.
31. Reported sick with bad arm and the pain was terrible.
