1.
At Penin. Clearing up all day. [Penin west of Arras]
2. Practicing sham attacks at Fincques(?)
3. Reveille at 5 o'clock. A second sham attack at Fincques(?)
4. Same as yesterday. Smoke attack at Fincques(?) in very fine weather.
5. We had a jolly good bath at Fincques(?). Sunshine all day. Had a
week's rest in jolly fine weather.
6. Left Penin 9 a.m. Arrived at Ivergny at 3 o'clock. [Ivergny west
of Arras and north of Doullens]
7. Left Ivergny. We arrived at Humbercamps. [Humbercamps between Arras
and Doullens]
8. At Humbercamps clearing up. Showery and sunshine.
9. Smoke helmet parade. Raining all day. Bath in Cresoil(?)
10. Digging on a communication trench. Good weather.
11. Breakfast at 4 a.m. after digging. Company sports.
12. Resting all day. Digging on a communication trench.
13. Came back wet through. Breakfast 4a.m. Second week of rest. Brilliant
sunshine all week.
14. Divine Service at Humbercamps in very fine weather. Digging at night.
15. Fatigued from digging. Breakfast 4 a.m. Weather very dull.
16. Bayonet fighting. Digging at night. Fine weather.
17. Lieutenant Cooper killed by a Rifle Grenade. Digging at night.
18. Fatigued from digging. Breakfast at 4 a.m. Weather fine all day.
Concert at night.
19. Rest all day. Left Humbercamps for the support trenches at Foncquevillers.
Received Mother's parcel.
20. At Foncquevillers digging in the support trenches.
21. Fatigued from digging in the support line. 12 a.m. gas alarm and
aeroplane.
22. Guard to 12 a.m. Digging in the communication trench.
23. Digging at night. Raining all night.
24. Digging 9.30 to 12.30. Rest of the day ours.
25. Nothing doing. Still in the support line digging at night.
26. Left support trenches for the firing line for eight days. The eight
days in the support line done. 3 killed and 7 wounded.
27. Arrived safe and sound in the firing line. Listening post over the
top.
28. Artillery duels. Weather fine all day. Listening post at night again.
29. Went over the top on a listening all night. Rain all day.
30. Sunshine all day. On sentry duty all night long.
