Outline History

  • 1914: In September 1914 the volume of recruits allowed the Sherwood Foresters to raise another Service battalion. Consequently, at Derby on 13 September, the 10th Battalion was formed and attached to the 51st Brigade, 17th (Northern) Division as part of 'K2', the second wave of Kitchener's New Army. Training the new recruits at Wareham began at once.
  • 1915: Between 12 and 17 July the 17th (Northern) Division began arriving in France.
  • 1916: Involved in: Actions of the Bluff 14-15 Feruary, Battle of Albert 1-13 July (including the capture of Montauban, Mametz, Fricourt, Contalmaison and La Boisselle).   • 1917: Involved in: First Battle of the Scarpe 9-14 April (including the capture Monchy le Preux and Wancourt Ridge), Second Battle of the Scarpe 23-24 April (including the capture of Guemappe and Gavrelle), Capture of Roeux 13-14 May, First Battle of Passchendaele 12 October, Second Battle of Passchendaele 26 October-10 November.
  • 1918: Involved in: Battle of St. Quentin 21-23 March, First Battle of Bapaume 24-25 March, Battle of Amiens 8-11 August, Battle of Albert 21-23 August (including the capture of Chuignes), Second Battle of Bapaume 31 August-3 September, Battle of Havrincourt 12 September, Battle of Epehy 18 September, Battle of Cambrai 8-9 October (including the capture of Villers Outreaux and Cambrai), The pursuit to the Selle 9-12 October, Battle of the Selle 17-25 October, Battle of the Sambre 4 November (including the passage of the Sambre-Oise canal and the capture of Le Quesnoy).
