Derbyshire Lads: The Sherwood Foresters: 13th Battalion

13th (Reserve) Battalion

This unusual battalion was formed in October 1914 as part of Lord Kitchener's third wave of volunteers (K3) and was based in Plymouth, Cornwall. Initially it was designated as another Service battalion and was attached to 98th Brigade, 33rd Division. But the battalion was not sent serve overseas and, in April 1915, was redesignated as a reserve battalion for training new recruits and supplying drafts to the Sherwood Forester Service battalions. In September 1916 it was redesignated again, this time as 12th Training Reserve (TR) Battalion and was attached to the 3rd Reserve Brigade based at Brocton, along with the 14th (Reserve) Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters..
