20th (Labour) Battalion

(28th & 29th Labour Companies)

The battalion was formed in Derby in May 1916 and was quickly moved to France, arriving in July. As a labour battalion (i.e. non-combatant unit) the unit was assigned to Fifth Army HQ, which had just been created (May 1916) under the command of Sir. Hubert Gough . Reorganisation in April 1917 saw the various labour battalions in the armies collectively placed in a new Labour Corps. Existing battalions were 'halved' into companies and redesignated. The 20th (Labour) Battalion Sherwood Foresters was divided and renamed 28th and 29th Labour Companies. Both companies continued to work with the Fifth Army.
