2nd Battalion

18th & 71st Brigade, 6th Division

Outline History

  • 1914: Like the 1st Battalion, the 2nd Battalion was a regular unit. It was in Sheffield when the war began and became part of 18th Brigade, 6th Division, concentrating around Cambridge. The Division landed in France on 10 September in time to reinforce the BEF at a critical juncture, the Battle of the Aisne Heights, suffering casualties of 17 out of 22 officers and 214 out of 930 other ranks. The Division was also involved in the Battle of Armentieres.
  • 1915: Involved in: Actions of Hooge. On 27 October the battalion was transferred to 71st Brigade (also in 6th Division).
  • 1916: Involved in: Battle of Flers-Courcelette (including the capture of Martinpuich), Battle of Morval (including the capture of Combles, Lesboeufs and Gueudecourt), Battle of Le Transloy, all parts of the Battle of the Somme.   • 1917: Involved in: Battle of Hill 70, Battle of Cambrai (including the Capture of Bourlon Wood).
  • 1918: Involved in: Battle of St. Quentin, Battle of Bailleul (including the defence of Neuve Eglise), First Battle of Kemmel, Second Battle of Kemmel, Battle of the Scherpenberg, Advance in Flanders, Battle of Epehy, Battle of the St. Quentin Canal (including the passage at Bellenglise and capture of Bellicourt tunnel defences), Battle of Beaurevoir, Battle of Cambrai (2nd), Pursuit to the Selle, Battle of the Selle.
