52nd (Graduated) Battalion

'Graduated' and 'Young Soldier' Battalions were first formed in 1917. The 52nd (Graduated) Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters was formed from the 278th Graduated Battalion which had been 'turned out' by the 14th Training Reserve Battalion.

On 24 September 1917 the 2nd (Graduated) Battalion was attached to the 200th (2nd Surrey) Brigade of the 67th (2nd Home Counties) Division. This Division was originally formed in November 1914 from the Home Service men of the Territorial Force units in the 44th Division. The Division remained at home throughout the war but many of its men were drafted to Battalions serving in Divisions overseas.
