Derbyshire Lads: The Sherwood Foresters: 53rd Battalion

53rd (Young Soldier) Battalion

'Graduated' and 'Young Soldier' Battalions were first formed in 1917. The 53rd (Young Soldier) Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters was formed from the 13th Young Soldier Battalion which had been 'turned out' by the 13th Training Reserve Battalion. Young Soldier Battalions were designed to put 18 year old recruits through basic training.
