Key:

• K1, K2 etc. = The sequence in which volunteer Battalions, were raised; K1 indicating the first batch of 'Kitchener Volunteers', K2 the second and so on
• Regular = full time, professional battalions which were maintained even in peace time
• Reserve = non-combat units based in the UK for training new recruits to draft to the fighting battalions
• S = Service Battalion, the formal title of battalions raised from volunteers
