  • ELLIS, W SERGEANT 19066: DCM & Bar. DCM gazetted 18 August 1917. Bar gazetted 29 October 1918 - "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This N.C.O. showed pluck and daring of a very high order during an enemy attack, especially when going forward with his commanding officer to reconnoitre the situation. His C.O. was wounded and Sergeant Ellis, though wounded himself and with the enemy within a few yards, managed with the help of two others to bring him back under cover."
  • EWIN, ARTHUR 9th QUARTERMASTER & HON. LIEUTENANT: Lieutenant and Quartermaster in the 9th Sherwood Foresters. During Boer War served as Colour Sergeant in G Company 1st Battalion, number 2855. Dangerously wounded at Smaldeel 19 June 1901 whilst serving with No. 1 Mounted Infantry Company. DCM gazetted 27 September 1901 whilst with No. 10 Mounted Infantry. In 1907 he succeeded Capt. McGuire on the staff of the 4th Battalion and was "practically in charge of the Newark depot, and was living in the town when war broke out". Service: 1 July 1915 sail for Mudros. 20-31 July Cape Helles, Gallipoli. 7 August 1915 Suvla Bay. Derby & Chesterfield Reporter of 3 Sept 1915 reports that he had 27 years experience in the army. Whilst in Boer War he was also mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 10 September 1910). Originally from Tibshelf.

He showed the greatest determination and courage throughout the reconnaissance, and when his C.O. and the serjeant that formed the party had both been wounded actually on the parapet of the trench occupied by the enemy, this man with Pte. Clasp to DCM awarded Gazette Issue 29637 published on the 23 June 1916, "For consistent and conspicuous gallantry during several days of heavy bombardment by the enemy. He worked incessantly, with utter disregard to personal danger, when the enemy were only 30 yards distant. He
    tended the wounded and rebuilt gaps in the parapet in full view of the enemy."
  • KIMBERLEY, J.W SERGEANT 13028: DCM & Bar: Bar awarded "Conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in organising and directing the fire of his Lewis gun section against hostile counterattacksand under hostile barrage. He also made valuable reconnaissances, and skilfully
    turned a captured machine gun upon the enemy, showing on all occasions theutmost coolness and initiative and setting a fine example to his men." Gazette Issue 30251 published on the 24 August 1917. D.C.M. gazetted 4th June, 1917.

  • LEWIS, G SERGEANT 27737: DCM award: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. He rallied and organised a party of men and advanced under heavy machine-gun and rifle fire, and maintained his position, thus materially helping to restore the situation. He subsequently made two journeys with the wounded to his company headquarters in full view of the enemy.   • PARKER, F 1/5th SERGEANT 201206: DCM gazetted 12 March 1919. From Derby. DCM award: "201206 Sjt. F. Parker 1/5th Bn., Notts & Derby. R, T,F. (Derby). At Regnicourt, on 17th October, 1918, when the final objective had been reached in parts, he observed a nest of enemy machine guns enfilading the line and causing many casualties. He immediately organised a party of men, and, working round to a flank, charged the post, capturing two machine guns and killing or wounding the teams. His fine courage and initiative prevented many casualties, and enabled the remainder of the objectives to be taken." Gazette published on 2 December 1919.

  • POYSER, P 1/6th PRIVATE 241116: DCM award: "241116 Pte. P. Poyser, 1/6th. Bn., Notts, & Derby. R., T.F. (Mayfield, Staffs.). For conspicuous gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty near Ramicourt on 3rd October, 1918. When a platoon became disorganised, this man rallied the men, assumed command, and led them personally to their objective. During the action he assisted a Lewis gun team by filling magazines, and on one occasion, when the team was wiped out, he fired the.gun himself, accounting for an enemy-machine gun which was causing numerous casualties and holding up the advance. When his officer and the N.C.Os. of his platoon were all casualties, he took command of the platoon and brought them most ably out of action." Gazette Issue 31668 published on the 28 November 1919.
  • RAWDING, J.F 1/8th C.S.M. 305007: DCM gazetted 12 March 1919. From Newark.
  • ROBERTS, W SERGEANT 11201: DCM award: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in attacking and attempting to cut off a hostile patrol which was raiding a listening post. Shortly afterwards he was wounded, for the fourth time during this campaign, and the successful repulse of this raid was entirely due to his dash and initiative." Gazette Issue 30251 published on the 24 August 1917.
  • ROSE, V 10th LANCE CORPORAL 307445: DCM award: "307445 L./C. V. Rose, 10th Bn., Notts. & Derby. R. (Castleton). For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the Foret de Mormal, on 4th November, 1918. He and his companion were at the time privates, and were linesmen. The wire was laid through the outskirts of Futoy, which was being heavily shelled, but these two men remained working on the line for forty-eight hours without rest. The wire was broken every ten minutes, but it was at once mended by these two very gallant men, and it was owing, to their fine spirit and untiring, energy that communication was kept up with the brigade throughout the operations."   • SALT, D 10th CORPORAL 14483: Gazette Issue 29608 published on the 2 June 1916.
  • SCAIFE, C 10th CSM 14481: DCM award:"14481 C./S./M. S. Scaife, M.M., 10th Bn, Notts. & Derby. R. (Creweton). For most conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Neuvilly, 13th October, 1918, in discovering the enemy's machine guns and snipers, in the village, and bringing in a Lewis gun when its team had all been killed or wounded. He also went and found two missing patrols in daylight under machine-gun fire, thereby obtaining valuable information from the patrols, who had all become casualties and unable to return. He afterwards took out stretcher-bearers, and succeeded in bringing in all the wounded and killed. He did fine work." Gazette Issue 31668 published on the 28 November 1919.
  • SHAW, E 1/5th SERGEANT 200239: DCM award: "200239 Sjt. E. Shaw, 1/5th Bn., Notts. & Derby. R., T.F. (Derby). At Regnicourt, on 17th October, 1918, he showed marked gallantry and powers of leadership while in command of his platoon. He carried his men forward under heavy machine-gun fire until held up by fire, when he at once organised rifle and Lewis-gun fire, and with a few men worked to a flank, where he found a gap. Rushing forward, he charged the enemy post, capturing two machine guns and several prisoners. He did splendid work." Gazette Issue 31668 published on the 28 November 1919.
  • SIMMONS, O 1/5th PRIVATE 265124: DCM award: "265124 Pte. O. Simmons, 1/5th Bn., Notts. & Derby. R., T.F. (Nottingham). At Berthaucourt, on 24th September, 1918, during an attack on the enemy trenches, he showed great courage and contempt for danger. When the right flank was held up by machine-gun fire he got out on the top with another man under very heavy machine-gun fire, and endeavoured to work round the post. His comrade was killed, but without the slightest hesitation he pushed on, located the post, and started to bomb it. Through his fine action the gun was captured and the remainder of the team taken prisoners." Gazette Issue 31668 published on the 28 November 1919.

  • SMITH, W.B 1st SERGEANT 3783: DCM, MM. Bar to DCM gazetted 12 March 1919. From Nottingham.
  • SPRINGALL, R PRIVATE 73284: DCM award: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This man with another volunteered to accompany his commanding officer to reconnoitre the enemy's dispositions within our line. He showed the greatest determination and courage throughout the reconnaissance, and when his C.O. and the serjeant that formed the party had both been wounded actually on the parapet of the trench occupied by the enemy, this man, with Pte. Groom, brought back their C.O., who was unable to move, into safety. He behaved magnificently." Gazette Issue 30983 published on the 29 October 1918. From Stratford.
  • TILLEY, E.W 15th SERGEANT 25778: DCM award: " 25778 Sjt. E. W. Tilley, 15th Bn., Notts. & Derby. R. (Derby). During operations around Kloefhoek, on 14th October, 1918, he displayed remarkable gallantry and initiative. On one occasion, single-handed, he captured an active enemy machine gun and crew, which were causing casualties by firing from a house. On another occasion he led a small party against a retiring enemy ammunition column consisting of four wagons, and on the drivers showing fight he killed or wounded them all, thereby capturing the column intact. His splendid courage and leadership largely contributed to the success of the operations undertaken by hie company." Gazette Issue 31668 published on the 28 November 1919.
  • WHITE, E CORPORAL 240244: DCM award: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When on a daylight patrol this noncommissioned
    officer and another attacked a shell-hole post behind the enemy wire and killed the three occupants. The patrol then entered the shell-hole for identification, but were attacked by seventeen of the enemy and withdrew to their lines and took out a Lewis gun, which they used with great effect on the enemy. This non-commissioned officer has always shown great courage, particularly on patrols." Gazette Issue 30983 published on the 29 October 1918. From Matlock.
  • WILLIAMS, C 1/5th CORPORAL 34075: DCM award: "34075 Cpl. C. Williams, 1/5th Bn., Notts. & Derby. R., T.F. (Walsall). For most conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Montbrehain on 3rd October, 1918, during a strong enemy counter-attack. In spite of being severely wounded he obtained possession of a Lewis gun, and, taking it to a very exposed position on the flank, opened fire on the enemy. He remained at this post for six hours holding off the enemy till finally relieved in an exhausted condition. His1 self-sacrifice and devotion saved his company at a very critical time."
