There is no fixed rule for the siting of machine gun positions. It might be placed in the fire trench, just in front of it or even in front of the obstacle. No matter where MG's are sited they almost invariably fire to a flank and must be well concealed with overhead cover. The Germans use vari-coloured sandbags for their parapets so as to make sure their loopholes are less conspicuous. Germans use MG pits the roofs of which can be raised and lowered.
