Work and Working Parties

Men should work in reliefs of 4 hours each (p.15 MFE). The rate of work per man is 1 cubic yd per hour.
Work to be marked out with tapes. 5ft frontage per man. Work to be commenced from left. Picking to be commenced from rear at first to prevent accidents.
Detail squad to make latrine in first place.
If water supply is obtained from a stream make sure that water is not polluted on up-stream side.
Learn to use tools with both hands.
In picking make every use of weight of pick.
1st Relief to finish off half of job and leaves sides and bottom of trench clean.

Work should be done as in fig 1, not as in fig II, where the 2nd Relief would have harder work to do owing to the greater distance the soil would have to be lifted.

Points in Night Work: No noise in moving tools. In moving from place to place each man should hold half of pick of man in front to keep in touch.
