Officer Training Manual

What follows is a transcription of the notebook of a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2/6th Royal Welsh Fusiliers made during lectures whilst undergoing officer training at Ongar in Essex. This officers christian names are not completely clear and nor is the year in which it was written* but, thankfully, his notebook is extremely detailed and beautifully illustrated. Unfortunately this is the only one of his notebooks to survive and covers only the lectures he attended between August 4th and August 19th.

Covering several subjects, many so 'trivial' as to be largely forgotten, this journal records the type of training the army saw fit to give to its newest officers.

The author, 2nd Lt. Roberts, 2/6th Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He survived the war.

* The section entitled 'The Attack on Hooge' places the journal as no earlier than August 1915. For a variety of reasons I suspect the course took place in August 1916.
